Clinical Utility
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) measured in body fluids (pleural, peritoneal, pericardial, cyst fluid) helps distinguish malignant from benign effusions. Elevated levels suggest malignancy, particularly adenocarcinomas (GI, lung, breast, ovarian). Also useful for differentiating mucinous from non-mucinous pancreatic cysts.
