Serum in plain tube (red top) or SST tube (yellow top) or in a separation vial. Centrifuge tubes within 1 hour. Separate centrifuged serum in plain tubes within 1 hour. When the order simply states vitamin D, select 25-hydroxyvitamin D (C1014) instead of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (C1015). Clinical Utility

This test measures the bioactive form of vitamin D. It is used in the differential diagnosis of hypocalcemia and to monitor patients with renal osteodystrophy or chronic renal failure.
