Test Requirements

Refer to lab handbook (specimen management guidelines) for detailed instructions. This is a test that requires MULTISAMPLING i.e. baseline sample collection (before administration of synthetic ACTH/ Synacthen/ Cosyntropin injection) PLUS samples collected at 30 min and 60 min after the injection. Sample labeling must ADDITIONALLY include the collection sequence i.e. 0 min, 30min, 60min. Samples without the collection sequence will be REJECTED. NB: Analyte being tested is cortisol therefore this test should NOT be internationally outsourced; liaise with Nakuru lab.

Clinical Utility

An endocrine stimulation test used when evaluating for adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease). Administration of synthetic ACTH (cosyntropin) should result in sufficient production of cortisol by the adrenal gland.
