Test Requirements

Sample Type: Serum. Fasting: Not required. Storage: Store refrigerated or frozen. Stable at 2–8°C for 2-4 days; for longer storage, freeze at –20°C or below.

Clinical Utility

Primary use: Monitoring and risk assessment of epithelial ovarian cancer. May be tested in conjunction with CA125. HE4 levels are less likely to be elevated in benign gynecological conditions compared to CA-125. Not diagnostic alone; elevated HE4 can occur in endometriosis, kidney disease, or lung cancer. Secondary use: May aid in distinguishing benign vs. malignant pelvic masses.
