Test Requirements

TWO concurrently obtained sample types are required i.e. serum AND pleural fluid. On each of the sample types, protein and LDH are analysed and the pleural fluid:serum ratios of each analyte calculated. Pleural fluid total protein values should not exceed serum values (fluid LDH may sometimes exceed serum LDH; however QC should be checked and sample/ result transposition excluded). This test is to be performed in-house i.e. NOT outsourced

Clinical Utility

Assessment of pleural effusions. Distinguish between exudates and transudates.
