Stone(s) is/ are obtained either 1) Surgically i.e. in theatre or 2) By the patient by FILTERING FIRST MORNING VOID URINE. They should then be allowed to DRY e.g. by air drying at room temperature for at least 24 hours on tissue or a towel. The dried stone(s) should then be put in a SCREW CAPPED PLASTIC CONTAINER with patient identifiers and the SOURCE/ TYPE OF STONE (e.g. renal, gall bladder stone; this is MANDATORY; where exact source location is known, capture that as well e.g. right kidney, left ureter). Do NOT submit in formalin, urine or other liquid or tape the specimen. Transport dry stone(s) at ambient temperature. Dry stones do not stick to the container. Stones that are received wet will have prolonged TAT to allow drying of the stone prior to analysis. Empty containers, taped specimens will be rejected.

Clinical Utility

Kidney or gall bladder stone assessment.
