EDTA (purple top) vacutainer. Useful for evaluation of transfusion reactions, hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), and autoimmune hemolytic anemia associated with disease and/or drugs.

Collect whole blood in CITRATE TUBE (LIGHT BLUE CAP) FILLED UP TO THE MARK & submit to the lab immediately at ROOM temperature. If >24 hour delay is expected between collection & analysis, centrifuge, separate plasma & freeze. Submit frozen plasma. Provide history e.g. whether patient is on anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin) and whether they have a bleeding tendency. 3ml EDTA (purple top vacutainer) and/ or sodium heparin (green top vacutainer) whole blood. Components include: % and absolute counts of CD3 (total T lymphocytes), CD4 (helper T cells), CD8 (suppressor T cells), CD19 (total B lymphocytes), CD 16+56 (NK cells)

Test cannot be ordered simply as flow cytometry. The exact panel must be specified by the ordering doctor. Order this specific panel ONLY for suspected ACUTE LEUKEMIA and this should be supported by previous tests e.g. peripheral blood film or bone marrow report. Leukopenic peripheral blood samples are suboptimal. 3mL EDTA + 3mL heparin peripheral blood / bone marrow sample required. Make fresh smears from EDTA sample. Slides to accompany vacutainers. Do NOT refrigerate.
